The Ship
________
That Night
was
cruel the sea was
inked
as black as the sky.
and the master of work laughed aloud
cracking his lash,
one eye/broken teeth
matted hair/torn clothes
and the smell of burning tar
though we had not eat or drunk for 5 days.
5 days
(now mindless and shaking)
hauling upon the ropes
that gore our calloused hands we
searched in vain for even
the most feeble breeze.
a whisper
a dying sigh
a mumbled prayer
that which will lead us
from her sickening gaze
That sun ...a hated ball
in a hated sky
and
caught I was
stealing food
from their diminishing store
they bore my body to the front deck
(too weak to resist)
and drove nails through it
and through the wood
and/the pain inside
shattering the bones of my hands
like neon rods
and/the crazed among them
licking at my spilling blood
for want of drink
and singing their lunatic songs
they gathered about me and
stamping their feet in time
one eye/broken teeth
torn clothes/matted hair
their lunatic eyes
watched
I watched
that hated ball
in that hated sky
bore down and
bore down and
burned my skin
slowly
slowly (my skin)
and my hands
………my hands
my hands……....
I
wishing that I would pass out
writhed terrifyingly beneath the iron
binding my palms to the oak
The scream sounding hollow and far away.
Endless
Nameless
